What would happen if every child in America wore a LiLi Key around their neck?
It’s a bold question—and one that holds a lot of weight.
But first, let me say this:
I don’t think we’ll ever live in a world where every child identifies as a Living Library.
And honestly… that’s okay.
This movement isn’t about one-size-fits-all solutions. It’s about making space for the children who do resonate—the ones who light up when they hear about the Key, the ones who feel something stir inside when they flip through Nate Kid and the Flip Side, the ones who whisper to themselves, “Where has this been my whole life?”
Those are the kids I show up for.
And if just one child in every classroom feels that spark, then the ripple is working.
🏫 The Kids Without a Category
In middle school and high school, there were categories for everything:
The jocks. The preppies. The nerds. The goths. The misfits. The popular kids.
But where was the category for kids like me?
The ones who believed in a brighter tomorrow.
The ones who weren’t afraid to fail, and brave enough to try anyway.
The ones who didn’t quite fit but still dreamed big, bold, world-changing dreams.
Don’t get me wrong, I personally LOVED my high school days as you can clearly see from my pics, but I do wish I felt like I fit in a little bit more than I did. (If we’re being completely honest, I STILL don’t feel like I truly fit in.)
In school, there wasn’t a name for us.
We floated. We improvised. We hoped we weren’t the only ones.
If Living Libraries® had existed then, I would’ve joined that club.
And if my school didn’t have one, I would’ve started it—and probably tried to be president, too.
Because that’s what Living Libraries do.
We don’t wait for belonging to find us.
We build it.
🔑 What the LiLi Key Really Means
The LiLi Key isn’t about status. It’s about identity.
It’s not about being the best reader in the room. It’s about being someone who reads to grow. Who reads to change. Who reads to become.
Living Libraries® don’t just consume books.
They absorb them.
They transform them.
They use what they learn to improve the world—for themselves, their communities, and the generations to come.
We aren’t bookworms hiding in corners.
We are book builders, idea igniters, ripple makers.
And we are many…and growing…
🌿 A Club That Didn’t Exist—But Now Does
Imagine Living Libraries® clubs at every school.
Kids come together weekly to share what they’re reading and how they’re applying it to life.
Planning projects. Applying for real funding through the future Living Libraries® Foundation.
Pitching ideas, building movements, and applying for real scholarships tied to their reading-based impact.
It’s coming.
Not all at once. Not for every child.
But for the ones who feel it?
We’ll be here. Keys in hand. Hearts wide open.
Because the truth is:
Not every child will become a Living Library®.
But every child who wants to… should be able to.
And that’s why we’re here.
To grow.
To ripple.
To give every big-hearted, big-dreaming kid a place to belong. Because…they already do.
